Big John’s PFI, SODO, Seattle, 2002.
Each year around this time I make my annual batches of fruitcake and remember Big John’s PFI fondly. It was my supplier of excellent quality candied fruit which is otherwise rather hard to find (the only other reliable supplier I have found is A Southern Season in Chapel Hill, NC). It offered all kinds of Italian foods, Latvian sprats, great cheeses and a fantastic assortment of olives. Part of the fun was the warehouse ambience, nothing wasted on overhead! Where I presently live there is no food shop even remotely similar, and I miss access to PFI. They have a web presence, so I guess they are still operating.
